Movie Month: February: DC Comic Book Movies

Well, I didn’t quite accomplish the full list. Got too distracted by life and other things, and got really sick and tired of superhero movies about halfway through the month. But I watched enough of them that I’m still going to do this post anyway!

The decently good – These are the movies that I watched that I sorta liked but wasn’t crazy about.
– Superman II got the tone and character of Superman right, and I liked the Zod gang, but the pacing of the movie sucked (really boring for a long time, and then a really long action sequence)  and I hated the ending.
– Man of Steel went for a different tone which didn’t really work for me. I felt like it did an ok job of Superman, but completely neglected who Clark Kent is.
– I liked the 1989 Batman a lot. I liked how they focused on Vicki Vale as kinda the main character for the first half of the movie.
– Batman Forever was a little stupid but over the top in kind of a fun way.
– Dark Knight Rises was not quite as good as the previous Nolan features but was decent. Too long though.

The not great – Here are the ones that I didn’t like, but didn’t really hate either.
– Superman and the Mole Men was kind of a fun B 50’s sci-fi movie, which wasn’t really about Superman (although he features heavily in it). It was really interesting to see, but frick is it boring.
– Superman III wasn’t terrible but I thought this one was pretty stupid. Richard Pryor was the only memorable part of the movie for me.
– Superman Returns is like a half-decent movie that made some huge mistakes. It’s edited weird in a way that like, they let every scene/take drag on way too long which makes the movie feel more boring than it is. And the story was handled stupidly.
– 1966 Adam West Batman movie was… ugh not my favourite. I liked the old Batman show but this movie was just like over the top campy and went so long. I was so bored and not into most of the jokes.

The Worst – These are my pics for worst DC movies (that I watched this month).
– Green Lantern – This movie is really bad. It looks bad (effects and shooting), there are really dumb lines and story problems, but the worst part, is just how unlikeable the lead character is. I like Ryan Reynolds generally and his acting isn’t the problem. But they made Hal Jordan, this lazy jerk who somehow is super handsome/fit and has the coolest job in the world. His pride costs tons of regular Joes their jobs, he is totally loved by his friend’s dad and the dad treats his own child like crap and Hal does too, he is unreliable to his family and shows up at his nephew’s birthday super late, AND like worst of all, one of his first scenes with Carol is him trying to pressure her into dancing and him not accepting that NO MEANS NO. That may sound silly, but seconds before that they are hinting about the two of them having sex earlier then it leads right into this discussion of her saying “no” to him and him constantly pressuring her until he gets his way. Its supposed to seem charming I think, but in the context, it is kind of disturbing.
– Superman IV: The Quest for Peace – So stupid. The plot is all over the place and stuff is introduced for no reason, and other plotlines are just dropped with no resolutions. Superman robs the entire world of their weaponry, but they all applaud him in what is one of the stupidest and cheesiest movie scenes I think I’ve ever seen.
– Batman & Robin – I’ve always heard this movie is bad, but I was not ready for the level of bad movie I would experience. It is so bad on every level. From the awful puns and ridiculously dumb dialogue, to the horrible B movie sets and lighting, this movie feels like something that YTV would make to show between cartoons. Like it was “The Zone” or whatever. At times it strayed into “So bad it’s good” territory, but for the most part it was confusingly horrible.

The Best – My personal faves.
– Superman – So incredibly charming and beautiful a movie. They really nail the tone of who Superman is and all of the characters are done so well. I loved the creativity with the Krypton scenes. I loved his relationship with Lois, and watching the two fall in love felt real. I loved Gene Hackman as Lex Luthor. Yeah there were a few dumb parts, and it could use a bit more action, but I was utterly enchanted by this movie.
– Batman Begins – I decided while rewatching this movie this month, that this really is the perfect comic book movie. It nails the origin story. All of the characters are done well and don’t feel too “flat”. It knows exactly the moment to switch to a new scene to avoid the movie getting boring. It creates a hero and villains in a way that doesn’t feel stupid or forced. My only problem is that there are like 10-15 decently developed characters in this movie, and only 1 is a lady. I liked the character of Rachel Dawes just fine, but this movie is a bit of a bro fest.
– The Dark Knight – Batman Begins might be the perfect comic book movie, but The Dark Knight transcends the genre entirely and is a work of art. The performances are definitely great and everyone praises Eckhart and Ledger but there’s a lot more to why this movie is so good. The directing is so incredible. Nolan frames these hauntingly beautiful shots and not only that but conveys information through visual imagery and has visual irony and all sorts of really artistic choices for a simple superhero movie. Last thing I’ll say is that this whole movie can be divided into 10-15 minute long mini-movies with plots that develop and pay off in climactic action scenes and the way they all flow together is really impressive once you notice it.

Well that’s it my friends! Next month I’m supposed to do Marvel but I’m so burnt out on superheroes, I might change my mind! peace out!

Too Many Games

Ok so I’ve been a little “all work and no play” lately, with each day being a long to do list of all the things I want to accomplish as well as lots of time in school and work. Even when I would watch movies, I wouldn’t watch what I really wanted to watch, I would be following some dumb list I came up with a month or two ago. Life took a few bad turns over the past few weeks and I’ve felt just overwhelmed. That’s why I’ve decided that for my own mental health, I need to start relaxing a little more. I’ve ditched the movie list, instead opting to just watch what I feel like. I’ve also gotten back into video games in a major way.

In the past what I would do is have 1 or 2 games going at a time. Like “oh this is a single player game I’m trying to beat, and this is a multiplayer game I just play for fun sometimes.” But because I haven’t had a lot of time for video games, I haven’t really gotten into any single game. Instead, I’ve got a bunch of games on the go. And because I couldn’t think of anything interesting to write about  today, I’m going to talk about games!

Stardew Valley – This game is weirdly addicting but not overly exciting. It is very reminiscent of the old Harvest Moon games. You inherit a farm and then it is up to you to clear the land and start making money and growing your farm. You can also go fishing and fight little monsters, but the thing that I love about this game is the social aspects. In town are a bunch of different characters and if you give them gifts that they like, they’ll start to like you. Once they like you, they’ll send you gifts in the mail. I don’t know why I’m so addicted to this game, but I spend hours playing this game and researching who likes what gifts and where to catch certain fish and stuff.

Skyrim Remastered – Skyrim is great. Just a fun old fantasy adventure where you can explore this huge landscape and do almost anything. I’ve beaten the game before but this is such a fun game to return to. I’ve discovered every location in the game and I’m not even halfway through the main story.

Battlefield 1 – A World War 1 shooter that is actually really good. The game is so cinematic and artsy and at times, I feel like it actually captures the “war is hell” thing that the great war poets would talk about. The multiplayer is also really fun. I don’t always have a good kill/death ratio, but I consistently get one of the highest point scores on my team because of my love of capturing enemy bases, and destroyed enemy tanks with mines. The other day a plane was coming at me and I fired randomly into the air with my rifle and SOMEHOW HIT THE PILOT KILLING HIM. It was hilarious. That guy must hate me.

Pokemon Moon – I loved pokemon as a kid. I kept buying each new generation but gave up after a while because the games got so stale. I bought Y a couple years ago and it was decent, really felt like a return to form in terms of quality, but then I bought Moon and it has been really wowing me lately. It creates this awesome island feel and the character designs are great and I don’t know how to explain my love of this game.

Tales of Zestiria – Some Japanese RPG that looks super anime. I bought it because it was on sale and I really enjoyed a different game in the series called Tales of Symphonia. Zestiria is decent but I’ve been reluctant to play too much into it as I feel like I have a lot of games on the go.

Marvel Ultimate Alliance – This game was also on sale and I haven’t played it since PS2, so I was curious to see how it would be on PS4, and also I just missed this style of game.

FF7 – Final Fantasy 7 was one of my favourite all time games and then I saw that the PS4 version was on sale so I thought “hey why not”. It came with this premium theme so that when I’m in the menus on PS4, it plays music from the game and makes the menu noises when I move the cursor around. Hearing those old sounds gave me such a hankering to play this game so of course, I now have to add this to my expanding list.

Well that’s about it. The part of my brain that loves checking off items on a to-do list is going a little crazy that I have so many to get through right now, but the part of me who just wants to chill and play games is feeling alright! Anyway, I should probably go play one of those right now. Peace out!

V-Day

Love! Romance! Winged babies carrying medieval weaponry! So much food I can’t eat on my diet!

That’s right baby, it’s Valentine’s Day. And I’m celebrating the way you might expect a single 30 year old to celebrate. Yep, I made myself bacon and eggs, watched Batman Forever, and now I’m procrastinating writing a Shakespeare essay.

This day used to be torture for me. Like the painful reminder of being single stabbing into me like a thousand little cupid arrows directly into my soul. But now I’m more mature and also by this time my dismal love life is old news. I have more pressing concerns.

My diet is going pretty well. I’m a month into it, lost 26 lbs. Mostly water weight I’m sure, but it still feels good. This week has been weirdly busy so I don’t have enough time to cook my own meals often so I’m sure this week will be a bad one. I’ve had some digestion problems for like the past 4 days so that’s been fun!

My car is written off. I got into the stupidest fender bender and it somehow wrote off the car despite the damage being barely visible. They are offering me a decent price and all, but I really liked that car and I’m so mad that they won’t fix it that I can’t bring myself to go sign those papers yet.

I’m also looking for a new place. Oh and I’m being audited by the government. Seriously, it’s been a rough couple of weeks. That’s why I don’t have much time to devote my focus to feeling sorry for my lonely condition.

I apologize for the rambling nature of this post. I really just don’t feel like writing this Shakespeare essay. Well I hope you all had a wonderful and romantic Valentine’s Day and if not, cheer up! It will get much worse and then you’ll regret the days when being single was your only problem! Cheers!

Movie Month: February: DC Comics Movies List

Hey friends! This is going to be a shorter post. In my last post I talked about my decision to watch through 365 movies this year and how I was going to do each month by theme and today I wrote out my full list for this month. I thought I’d share my list in case anyone wants to join in!

NOTE: I’m not including any movie that I saw last year (so Suicide Squad and BvS) because I already reviewed them on my letterboxd account.

  1. Superman and The Mole Men (1951)
  2. Superman (1978)
  3. Superman II (1980)
  4. Superman III (1983)
  5. Superman IV: Quest for Peace (1987)
  6. Superman Returns (2006)
  7. Man of Steel (2013)
  8. Supergirl (1984)
  9. Batman (1966)
  10. Batman (1989)
  11. Batman Returns (1992)
  12. Batman Forever (1995)
  13. Batman & Robin (1997)
  14. Batman Begins (2005)
  15. The Dark Knight (2008)
  16. The Dark Knight Rises (2012)
  17. Catwoman (2004)
  18. Steel (1997)
  19. Watchmen (2009)
  20. Swamp Thing (1982)
  21. Return of Swamp Thing (1989)
  22. Jonah Hex (2010)
  23. Green Lantern (2011)
  24. Scott Pilgrim vs The World (2010)
  25. Hellboy (2004)
  26. Hellboy II: The Golden Army (2008)
  27. Chronicle (2012)
  28. Sky High (2005)

Now, you may notice those last 5 aren’t DC, but they aren’t Marvel either and I didn’t really have a place for them in my year so they got shoved into this month because they are related to superheros/comics.

I’d encourage anyone who wants to try this as well to go for it and to talk to me throughout the month! A lot of these I haven’t seen (or haven’t seen in so long I basically forget them). Next month is Marvel March. But I’m sure I’ll post something before then. Peace out pals!
